About This Adventure
There is a breathtaking contrast waiting on the eastern side of the island, where towering volcanic peaks dissolve into ancient, emerald-green forests and rugged ocean cliffs. We leave Funchal behind to take you on an immersive, full-day expedition that captures the grand scale of Madeira from its highest accessible heights down to its deepest roots. You will feel the true scale of the landscape as our Land Rover climbs above the cloud line, grips the dusty mountain tracks, and takes you into places where the air is pure and the views feel endless. Itinerary
Our day begins with a personal pickup from your hotel or a nearby spot in Funchal, waking up with the island as we immediately point the Land Rover toward the heavens. We climb steeply up the winding mountain roads until we reach the majestic Pico do Arieiro at 1810 meters, where you will stand above a vast sea of clouds and look out over jagged, sunlit peaks that stretch across the entire horizon.
From the high peaks, we descend into the lush, green heart of Ribeiro Frio for an easy, surrounding you with the deep silence and ancient trees of the native Laurissilva Forest. Afterward, we dive straight into the rugged dirt tracks of Lombo Galego, kicking up dust through the terraced agricultural fields and protected landscapes of Madeira’s Natural Park.
Next, we arrive in the historic town of Santana to see the charming, colorful thatched-roof cottages before heading over to Quinta do Furão for a spectacular lunch break perched high on a cliff side overlooking the roaring North Coast. Once we are fed and rested, we follow the coast down to the coastal village of Porto da Cruz, stepping inside an old sugarcane mill to breathe in the rich aromas and taste the traditional, fiery Madeiran rum.
We finish our loop at the dramatic Ponta de São Lourenço, the easternmost peninsula of the island, where the trees disappear and leave behind a raw landscape of red volcanic rock, crashing waves, and expansive views of both the north and south coasts at once. With salt on our skin and a camera full of incredible memories, we take a relaxed drive back to Funchal to close out a perfect day.
