Itinerary
Our journey kicks off with a personal pickup right from your doorstep or a close meeting point in Funchal, waking up with the island as we head west along the coast. Our first short stop is in the beautiful seaside village of Ribeira Brava, where we can stretch our legs, watch the morning waves hit the shoreline, and grab a quick coffee before we shift into four-wheel drive and head straight up into the mountains.
Next, we leave the paved roads behind and climb up onto the massive, wind-swept plateau of Paúl da Serra, conquering a rugged off-road trail and taking a brief, optional stroll along a peaceful mountain levada. From there, we roll right into the ethereal Fanal Forest, a magical, high-altitude sanctuary where ancient, twisted laurel trees emerge from the drifting mountain fog like something straight out of a fairy tale.
We then descend to the dramatic coast for a relaxed lunch break in Porto Moniz, where you can eat with panoramic views of the famous volcanic lava pools and the crashing Atlantic ocean. Fully re-energized, we follow the rugged northern shoreline to Seixal, stopping to dig our toes into the unique black sand beach and marvel at the steep green cliffs and roaring waterfalls that drop straight into the sea.
Our afternoon takes us through the picturesque valley village of São Vicente, nestled deep within a dramatic mountain bowl. Before we make our final crossing back over the mountain passes to Funchal, we will make one last essential stop at a traditional local tavern to toast our incredible day together with a glass of authentic, freshly made Madeiran Poncha.
