There is a golden warmth that settles over the south coast of Madeira, where the towering cliffs trap the day’s last heat and the ocean seems to turn to liquid gold. This full-day expedition is all about slow rhythms, hidden coastal secrets, and chasing the most spectacular sunset the Atlantic has to offer. We steer away from the standard commercial loops to take you on an open-air journey through historic sea-facing villages, along paths carved out of rock, and into places where you can still feel the island’s authentic, sun-kissed soul. You will feel the true thrill of adventure as our Land Rover navigates ancient, forgotten roads, grips the rugged dirt tracks, and pushes past dramatic waterfalls dropping straight into the sea.
We don’t do rigid schedules or crowded tour buses; we do real conversations, shared laughs, and genuine connections with people who want to feel the island rather than just photograph it. Itinerary
Our adventure begins with a personal pickup from your hotel or a nearby spot in Funchal at 14:00, catching the warm afternoon glow as we head down the coast to Ponta do Sol. We will roll into the historic village center, cross the iconic Caminho Real 23 bridge, and drive right through the famous Cascata dos Anjos waterfall, letting the fresh mountain water wash over the Land Rover in a spectacular, unforgettable welcome.
Next, we cruise over to Calheta to see its rare, golden sand beach, taking a moment to feel the soft sand underfoot and breathe in the warm sea breeze. This vibrant coastal spot offers a beautiful contrast to the rugged cliffs, making it the perfect place to pause and soak in the sunny microclimate that makes the south coast so incredibly special.
From the golden shore, we dive onto the rugged dirt tracks and ancient paths that connect the cliffside villages of Jardim do Mar and Paúl do Mar. This is where we leave the smooth asphalt behind, shifting into four-wheel drive to conquer the old trails, breathe in the salt air from the surfers' paradise below, and discover untouched landscapes that most travelers never get to see.
We push further west to the dramatic cliffs of Ponta do Pargo, visiting the isolated lighthouse and looking down into the sheer drop of the Garganta Funda waterfall as it cuts through the lush green terrain. Finally, we make our way to a secret, cliff-top vantage point just as the sky starts to turn orange, setting up for a magical, unhurried sunset experience where you can enjoy an optional dinner with new friends as the sun slowly sinks into the vast Atlantic ocean before our relaxed night drive back to Funchal.
